Why inspect & test your fire systems?

This point was pondered after speaking to a new customer (& property owner).   We conducted the first test & found that a 36 metre long fire hose reel on their site was 42 metres (& a couple of corners & a door) away from the furthest point of the building.   Their response was ‘why do you fire people always find things wrong…….?  This is exactly what we didn’t want‘.

Their response came as a bit of a shock, as I believed we were employed to ensure the fire protection equipment ..read more

Statistics about fires from NFPA Research (United States)

This is a great article about what causes fires in the USA & how often they occur.  It’s data from the USA, but the statistics are just as relevant to Australia.

If you haven’t got time to read the full article; this quote regarding smoke alarms hit-home.

“Almost all homes have at least one smoke alarm, but 63% of home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes without working smoke alarms.”

Dust Fires…

When we think of fires, we probably picture petrol tankers, plastics, wood, & electrical switchboards.

Rarely do we think of DUST as a fire risk!  Ask any grain-company or manufacturer of dusty goods & they’ll tell you differently. For example, fires & explosions in grain silos are quite common.  When the grain is disturbed or moved, dust is created & in the right mixture with air, it can be every bit as flamable as petrol. Some huge explosions have occurred over the years.

Hybrid Cars- emergency response procedures

While reading the American NFPA website, I noted an article on ‘responding to motor vehicle accidents involving a Hybrid or Electric car’ : http://www.nfpa.org/publicJournalDetail.asp?categoryID=1966&itemID=46403

While not strictly related to fire protection, it does relate to  our counterparts- the fire fighters.  It’s also a reminder to everyone working in property services to be careful!    Most equipment sold today has an  electrical component that could cause electrocution- cars, fire alarm panels, fan-controls, sliding fire doors, pressure switches….. everything!

Cheers,

Rob Broadhead
