The Coronial Inquest Into the Bankstown Apartment Fire where 1 resident tragically lost her life and another was seriously injured, highlights fire safety issues particularly in respect to buildings under 25m high that don’t require sprinklers. Scott Williams, CEO of the Fire Protection Association of Australia (FPAA) said “Had the residential part of the Euro Terrace building been sprinkler protected, we consider it highly likely that the fire would have been controlled or contained and these residents may not have had to make the decision to jump”. The FPAA plans to lobby the Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB) and state and territory regulators to consider the need for change in this regard.
