FEAR OVER HIGH RISE TOWER FIRE RISK IN MELBOURNE

Thankfully no occupants were hurt in the recent Melbourne high-rise tower fire, but compliance with fire safety standards has been called into question.  A statewide audit which commenced in 2012 has found that 45% of the permits audited were missing information ranging from minor details to potentially alarming health and safety breaches.  Unlike NSW, in Victoria local councils aren’t responsible for checking permits for compliance.  This is self regulated by the Victorian Building Authority.
